Total Number of Households

Definition

Estimate for total number of households in a predefined region. PRECEDE allows to view the number of households at various levels of granularity, including the number of households within a census tract, within a county, or state-wide.

Context/Impact on Health

The household is a fundamental unit of society, where a group of people share a shelter, share food and water, and other essentials of living. Households are at the center of many demographic, social, and economic processes, since decisions about childbearing, living arrangements, education, healthcare, job security, migration/emigration, and savings are made at the household level.

Data Collection Methodology

The American Community Survey (ACS) is a nationwide survey that collects information on the demographic, social, economic, and housing characteristics of the US population. The ACS is an ongoing survey sent to 3.5 million addresses each year. Estimates for the number of households within a geographic unit presented in PRECEDE are from the 2019 ACS.
